Modern Warfare

Following the announcement of the rebooted Modern Warfare, we take an in-depth look into what to expect when the game launches on October 25th.

The above video features the Multiplayer trailer, which was revealed on August 1st, and includes a more robust look into gameplay. The trailer consists of multiple engagements, showing off new weapons and killstreaks, driveable vehicles, breaching through doors, night-vision areas, and new intros to matches. The stream then went on to feature 6v6, 2v2 and 20v20 games on a variety of maps.

What’s new?

Following the reveal the community has learned a ton of information with regards to the Multiplayer for Modern Warfare.

Leaning returns as a cover-based mechanic (campers rejoice), allowing for more controlled recoil when mounted vertically or horizontally. Sprinting is also altered in the game, as players move slower, with more realistic gun movements, however can sprint at full pace with their gun holstered/raised.

Killstreaks return for kills only (a perk makes it work like MW2 and stack), and feature the likes of the Juggernaut, white phosphorous (which disorients enemy players), and the trusty UAV. The hot topic for debate among the fans currently is the decision not to include a traditional mini-map any more in core game modes. This was seemingly done to increase realism with the UAV streak displaying the map once activated, though many YouTubers have since voiced their concerns about the gameplay implications.

Gunsmith

Customisation is at the forefront of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Multiplayer mode, as there are 30 to 60 attachments per gun. This makes for some really unique loadouts, with up to 5 attachments per weapon. Many new sights were shown, as well as the heartbeat sensor which works differently to previous titles, as you have to equip it in your offhand, limiting offensive capabilities.

Perks

The classic three-tier system returns, doing away with Treyarch’s famed ‘pick 10’ system. The perks for the game, shown below, have been revealed, including some new additions as well as old favourites.

Perk 1
  • Double Time: Triple the duration of Super Sprint and fully refresh Super Sprint on kills.
  • E.O.D: Take reduced damage from non-killstreak explosives and fire. Hack enemy Claymores, Proximity Mines, and C4.
  • Scavenger: Resupply ammo from dead players.
  • Tracker: Enemies leave behind trails and death markers. Increase crouch movement speed by 30%.
  • Tune Up: Increase the charge rate of field upgrades by 50%.
Perk 2
  • Ghost: Undetectable by UAVs, Radar Drones, Heartbeat Sensors, and High Alert. Hide the death markers of enemies you kill.
  • Hardline: Your killstreaks cost 1 less kill.
  • Kill Chain: Killstreaks earned in your current life earn kill credit for other killstreaks.
  • Overkill: Carry two primary weapons.
  • Restock: Recharge equipment over 30 seconds.
Perk 3
  • Amped: Faster weapon swap and rocket launcher reload speed.
  • Battle Hardened: Reduce strength of enemy flash, stun, and EMP effects.
  • Cold-Blooded: Undetectable by AI targeting system and thermal optics. Immune to snapshot grenades.
  • High-Alert: Your vision pulses when enemies outside of your view see you.
  • Shrapnel: Spawn with an extra piece of lethal equipment. Explosive damage delays enemy health regeneration.
  • Spotter: See enemy equipment, field upgrades, and killstreaks through walls. Mark them for your team by looking at them while aiming down sights.

Maps

The confirmed maps are as follows, and were featured in the livestream shown above. Gun Runner, Hackney Yard, Azhir Cave (night), Grazna Raid, and Aniyah Palace make up what we have seen so far. Also shown off in the 2v2 Gunfight mode were King (similar to Killhouse), Pine and Stack; smaller maps promoting fast-paced combat.

It also may not be a surprise to learn that the team responsible for the original Modern Warfare map design have returned to Infinity Ward for this years’ release.

The beta starts first on PS4 on September 12th. For more Multiplayer information, check out the PlayStation Blog or go to callofduty.com.

Along with all of this juicy Multiplayer info, Campaign will be returning, featuring a more dark, realistic story. Infinity Ward narrative director Taylor Kurosaki said, “We spend about half the game playing alongside Tier 1 operators and about half the game playing alongside rebel freedom fighters. This is exciting not only from a storytelling perspective, where we can delve into the lives of these characters and see why they fight and what they fight for, but also from a gameplay perspective.”

This shift in tone, focusing more on the horrors of war has been done to reflect the world today, so that players will be able to relate to the characters, one of which includes the returning Captain John Price. There will also be a co-operative Spec-Ops experience returning for the first time since MW3.

Modern Warfare
The game may be a “re-imagining”, but Captain Price remains…

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches on October 25th for PS4, Xbox One and PC, pre-order now here for PS4 and here for Xbox.

Do you think this is enough to bring Call of Duty back? Are you hyped for this year’s game? Let us know in the comments or over on Facebook & Twitter. Personally, I’m looking forward to the night maps, and making use of the NVG and laser-sight attachments for close-quarter carnage.
