ff7 sephiroth

In the first part of Square Enix showing us the Final Fantasy 7 remake, we were treated to a lengthy gameplay trailer, wherein they demonstrated their new and improved combat system.

Gone are the turn-based slog fests of old, now we have a real-time action combat style, similar to FF15.

Unlike the most recent title however, the ATB system from the original has been implemented, with a fresh and frankly exciting redesign. Once the ATB bar has charged up, instead of being able to unleash your turn-limited attack like the original, in this more fast-faced version, you can use a special move, like Cloud’s signature braver or a magic spell. I admit I was skeptical, but seeing it in action looks like they made a brave but correct decision in their rework design.

Combat looks slick, with the tactical edge many fans were hoping for. I’ll pass on mashing attack endlessly, thanks…

Materia is back (thank god) and with a wonderful twist, as in the gameplay trailer we see Cloud can equip his fire spell into the very buster sword he wields. The uproar of the crowd when they see this demonstrates just how much the little addition was liked.

This is the key to the success of the FF7 remake, little additions that improve the game, without completely changing the formula and ruining everything the fans love.

If only you knew what happens in disk two Aeris, if only…

FF7 remake will take up two blue-ray disks

Hearkening to the old days when a Final Fantasy would come on multiple game disks, the remake for FF7 has been revealed to require multiple blue-ray disks to even fit everything it has in it. That’s a -lot- of game. What we’re not clear on is how this will be released – how many separate games this two blue-ray worth of content will be spread over. We do know something, though…

The first game will be entirely Midgar

Talk about expanding what we see here, as revealed at E3 2019, the whole of the first game for the FF7 remake will be set in Midgar.

Square Enix have stated they expanded the world to such an extent, and we’re going to see so much more development between the characters, that there’s simply enough content -just- within Midgar for a whole game. This still causes me a couple of worries, namely, is it being spread too thin, causing the games to feel unsatisfying, and are we going to be able to revisit Midgar in the next games or not.

Seeing how detailed Midgar is going to be with a whole dedicated game… exciting stuff, Square

Extended teaser trailer – The one winged angel returns

I won’t spoil it more than I have to, but Tifa guys, Tifa appears, and she’s even got realistic body proportions, something I’m sure a number are mildly miffed at… I can’t wait to see what the other cast members look like, though, with the reveal that we’ll only be in Midgar for the first game, I’m going to miss characters like Vincent and Yuffie being with us, talk about building the tension.

Here we see some more of that wonderfully fluid combat, and the appearance of our old nemesis sends a cheer through the crowd and the viewers spine. Sephiroth, fully rendered in 4K glory – it’s here. I suspect when he’s revealed along with his signature One Winged Angel theme, the FF7 remake will truly come into its stride.

What do you mean, realistic body proportions, what a terrible remake, unfaithful to the original!

I for one am way more excited about this than I was before, Square have done an amazing job of hyping this game up after the controversial decision to split into an episodic form. Here’s hoping they don’t mess it up.
