Death Stranding is a game filled with hidden quests, secrets and lore to expand upon the already interesting main game story. The following is 10 things that you probably missed during your playthrough. Warning, contains post-game spoilers.

Death Stranding secrets

The Musician

The Musician is located next to a large river in the Eastern region and is completely skippable (I missed him). If you can find his hideout, he tasks you with locating sheet music and in return will join the Chiral network and will present Sam with his very own harmonica. This can be used when resting using the touchpad (it plays that tune) and can also be seen when idle in game.

Customising your gear

Did you know that you can get a nifty hat from Nick Easton at Capital Knot City if you reach 3 stars with them? Did you also know that you can change the colour of these cosmetic items by inspecting your equipment rack in your private room? Well now you do. Same goes with vehicles too.

Yeah, I had too much fun in photo mode for this one…

Emails

This should be obvious, but emails give you a clue as to what is happening in your game world, as well as help to flesh out Death Stranding’s complex and intriguing narrative. Memory chips also contribute to this, giving an insight into how certain elements made their way into the game (e.g. how Low Roar was chosen for a good chunk of the game’s soundtrack).

Higgs’ house

Following on from our previous point, if you read your emails you would find that following on from the events at Edge Knot City, you have indeed been delivering pizza to none other than Higgs himself (not Peter Englert). You can also find some very interesting stuff here, as well as a memory chip.

The Elder

Sometime after joining the UCA, the Elder stopped taking his medication and permitted himself to die. With no one to tend to his corpse, he became a BT, albeit one contained within his home and therefore posing no voidout threats.

Fandom

The Elder is probably the least trusting of all the preppers, but his mind can be swayed if you continue to make deliveries for him. He will then join the UCA and will come around to Sam and Bridges. However, after reaching max level with him he will eventually pass away. Upon Sam’s next arrival it is revealed that the Elder is now a BT, though poses no threat. After discovering this you will be notified by email of his passing, along with some heart-felt words from the surrounding community.

Weapons

Weapons can do different things that you may not be aware of. Pressing triangle on the grenade launcher for instance changes the ammo type. You can load explosive, sleeping, BT blood, and even slippery rounds (they’re hilarious against Mules).

The Chiral Artist’s Mother

After getting three stars with the Artist’s mother, Sam can earn a pair of gold boots which offer increased protection and degrade slower. They also can’t be reproduced by a chiral printer.

Bonus: You can also get a custom ladder from the Junk Dealer which is lighter and more resistant to timefall than the base ladder. Yes, it’s also gold.

The Collector

If you can find him the Collector offers a cover for Sam’s bag (after reaching 2 stars). This allows all cargo stored on the back to be protected from timefall and is super useful for long trips through rainy BT territory. This can be upgraded after reaching level 4 and is customisable. Go gold, Sam loves bling.

Place signs

Signs can help other Porters to see upcoming trouble, such as BTs. They can also grant the player extra small bonuses, such as speed boosts in vehicles, BB likes, and player likes (likers get likes).

Resting = quick saving!

Stop wasting time navigating pesky menus and give Sam some well-deserved down time (and save your game). You can even play your newly acquired harmonica by using the touchpad while resting. Hold circle to rest.

Trading

Did you know that you can trade with the Porters you see on your travels? That’s right, all Sam must do is grab the packages held out towards him to initiate the trade. Then, go to cargo and place an unwanted item in his hands, drop it on the ground, and the trade is complete. This will also unlock the ‘Any Porter in a Storm’ trophy.

2 thought on “Top 10 things you missed in Death Stranding”
  1. What I missed is a point of the game and why in the hell did anyone enjoy it. Sure it looks good, but why is delivering stuff to people supposed to be an engaging gameplay idea after the utterly insane awesomness and variety of the Metal Gear series… I will never know.

  2. I did all those things lol. What I did miss. After completing the game and only hours before platinuming it, I realised when you press and hold up or down on the d-pad, I forget which, you can put on the otter hat and the different shades and stuff. And I still didn’t care.

Oh and making the baby pee was something I did ONCE and never bothered with ever again. WHY they embarrassed themselves showcasing that “feature” at a major gaming event I will never understand. I’m so glad the game failed in sales the way it did. It proves people won’t simply buy a game because of the amazing past rep of a game creator.
