Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the Titanfall series, have both unveiled and released their new free to play title Apex Legends.

Surprise!

Shown off in a stream yesterday, Apex Legends combines the first-person gameplay from Titanfall, with the frantic chaos of a battle royale to create something new entirely.

The game will feature 8 unique ‘legends’ at launch, each with a passive ability, tactical ability, and ultimate ability. Apex Legends will also feature execution moves, and will not include titans or wall running; presumably to keep things on a somewhat level playing field.

As the game is free to play, cosmetic DLC is something which will make an appearance, along with four ‘battle passes’ coming throughout the year to add more content.

Design director Mackey McCandlish added, “You can earn 45 Apex Packs just from playing, those each come with three cosmetic items – there’s no ‘pay for power’ – and we guarantee that each pack has a blue or rare quality item. A pack could also have epic, legendary items, or even multiples of those items. We guarantee that you get one legendary item for every 30 packs you open. And it tends to work that you get one more often than not.”

Apex Legends has already started to accumulate a following, gaining over 1 million players in just 8 hours.

The team at Respawn also announced that they are dedicated to working on the game, and a Titanfall 3 won’t be due out any time soon.

Apex Legends is available to download now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
