Epic Games, the studio behind the now massively popular Fortnite Battle Royale, have officially overtaken PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds as the most played game in the world.

Fortnite
The biggest game in the world? Epic Games thinks so…

This is due in part to the recent update to their map, which drew in 3.4 million players, beating PUGB’s record of 3.2 million. It is hard to say which game has the most active players in total however, as PUBG’s numbers reflect Steam players, though Fortnite could have included console too.

“It’s been an amazing and exhilarating experience to grow Fortnite from our previous peak of 60K concurrent players to 3.4M in just a few months, making it perhaps the biggest PC/console game in the world!” – epicgames.com

This number could’ve been even higher if not for server issues, ironically caused by a high volume of players. Epic Games have apologised for this, and have recently stated that fans can expect an optional 60 FPS mode on console later this month.

Bluehole, the developers of PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds have been quoted as “concerned” over the success of Fortnite, claiming that “they should have at least came to us before making it and had a discussion with us.” This is because of the similarities between the two games, despite Fortnite’s differences such as the cartoon aesthetics and base-building tactics.

PUBG shouldn’t be counted out just yet though, as the recently released Xbox One version of the game will become more popular as the quality of the game catches up to the PC version. Plus, there is the possibility of a PS4 launch further down the line.

As the popularity of ‘battle royale’ games increases, it is highly likely that more games in sub-genre will emerge, and the two pioneering studios will expand to meet the growing demand.
