Eternal Edge Skeleton

Eternal Edge + is an action-adventure game set in the vast lands of the Little Kingdom. Our young hero is on a quest to defeat the Lord of the Dead, using powerful weapons, armour, and hidden spells to help him on his daunting task.

News - Eternal Edge + - Eternal Edge + Beta Released!

Developed by Righteous Weasel Games, and published by Sedoc LLC, this promising title has been rocketing up the Steam charts in recent days. Ambitious, perhaps overly so, with a size of world akin to many much larger budget AAA titles. Similar in feel and look to the latest Legend of Zelda, if this title can pull off what it aims to achieve, it’ll be the heroic victory of the decade. Regardless, it looks like a quaint adventure in its own right.

At first glance, you would likely liken Eternal Edge Plus to something like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Gamerbraves

The title is a revamped version of the game Eternal Edge, which was released on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows in 12 April 2018.

If it’s anything like the original, the hero Cross will have to destroy three cursed orbs to awaken his slumbering wife, Evelynn. Story will delivered in similar ways to Breath of the Wild, with main and side quests scattered throughout a vast world. As I always say with this type of title, how well the side quests are implemented, and how the main narrative is pushed, will determine how gripping the title is. From our initial Damsel based story-line, it seems similar to Fallout 4 in that you will have a set immediate objective. Not quite as urgent as rescuing the child we all ignored in said Fallout 4, however. If the rescuing of a trapped damsel and slaying of a skeleton king is done as in Breath of the Wild – no rush, you need to be strong enough first, help the world, etc… then we’re in for a free-roam treat.

Eternal Edge + Combat
Combat looks familiar and smooth.

The combat again reminds me of the latest Zelda title, minus the controversial durability system. It’ll be interesting to see how the player character evolves through the game, whether we gain access to new abilities, how these ‘hidden spells’ work that we’ll be able to unlock.

To be perfectly honest, it isn’t possible for an indie game like this to stand up to the combat of AAA titles. You just don’t have enough people, time, or stringent enough quality control. It’s never wise to go in with that kind of expectation. What they can do better, however, is be creative. Conjure a unique feel, or try something special. It doesn’t look like something out of the box has been done here, but what they do have are interesting visuals. Which, combined with sleek controls and a quirky soundtrack, could give that unique feel of adventure and discovery.

Eternal Edge + Zelda Dungeon
Did someone let slip that I still enjoy topdown dungeons?

Switching perspectives is something to very wary of in game design, it can be confusing, and pull the player out of the experience they were previously immersed in. What I like here however, is that they’re pulling from different games of the same genre. Everyone remembers and either loves or hates the original 2D Zelda titles. Implementing top-down dungeons, which is what it looks like we’ve got here, might end up providing a wonderful break from the over-world. I love that they’re going to feel different not just because of the environment, but because of the way they play. I don’t know if it’s wise to make story-centric areas play out like this, though. Whether it’ll be a fun section, or a gimmicky annoyance, will depend entirely on how it’s put into the game.

How much of the game is referencing titles like Zelda, and how much is simply coincidental, is anyones guess. All I know is not everything is as it seems..

Eternal Edge +

I do have to say that I much prefer the visual style adopted in this re-imagining. It looks sleek, stylistic, pleasing to the eye. The previous Eternal Edge genuinely makes my eyes go a little blurry with the way the NPCs move. Take a look at some gameplay to see what I mean…

If any of this interests you, be sure to check out the trailer below, or the Righteous Weasel Twitter page for more! You can also wish-list the title on Steam here.

It looks visually interesting, I like the approach they’re taking from a design standpoint, it just depends how well they pull it all together! I for one look forward to seeing if Eternal Edge + reveals itself as a sleeper hit.

Eternal Edge + will be releasing 22/05/2020 on PC and Switch. Good luck if you decide to take the challenge!
