FromSoftware & George R. R. Martin’s open-world Dark Souls-esque game is right around the corner… Here’s what we know about Elden Ring.

The Golden Order has been broken…

As a ‘Tarnished’ it is up to the player to acquire the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord in the Lands Between. Queen Marika the Eternal rules these lands though the Elden Ring, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered.

“Marika’s offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered a war: The Shattering. A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will.

And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Tarnished who were spurned by the grace of gold and exiled from the Lands Between. Ye dead who yet live, your grace long lost, follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to stand before the Elden Ring.”

Dark Souls goes open-world

The player is able to create their character and set off to explore the world alone or with a friend. Traversal also changes up engagements and boss fights while still resembling a Souls game; the main change being horseback riding which can be seen in the preview. The scale is impressive and from what can be seen it looks as though Dark Souls fans are going to be getting a true open-world RPG to explore at their leisure, and yes there is a charming pot boi NPC.

The parchment-style map looks incredible from what can be seen and is sprawling with slight indications as to important areas. There will also be dungeons to explore offering a contrast the outside’s spacious combat, and once again highlights that Elden Ring really is a combination of all of FromSoftware’s ‘Soulsborne’ titles.

For more information, especially on Elden Ring’s combat systems, check out VaatiVidya’s latest video (spells do look great):

“Journey through the Lands Between, a new fantasy world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the influential DARK SOULS video game series, and George R. R. Martin, author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Unravel the mysteries of the Elden Ring’s power. Encounter adversaries with profound backgrounds, characters with their own unique motivations for helping or hindering your progress, and fearsome creatures.”

Bandai Namco

And yes, you may die. But you will return to fight again. For that is how a champion – or a Lord – is born.

Elden Ring launches on February 25th 2022 for Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows, though the Collector’s Edition is already sold out on the Bandai Namco website.
