General Tips

Choose a Legend that matches your playstyle

Abilities are a major factor of who wins and loses in Apex Legends, choosing someone who has abilities that suit the unique way you play is going to have a massive effect on how well you do. If you’re aggressive, go for fast movers – Octane, Pathfinder, Wraith. If you like to know where everyone is go for Bloodhound or Crypto. There are many different ways to play, and you can read on this in more detail in our Best Beginner Legends guide.

Apex Legends

You can’t cook grenades

That’s right, unlike many other titles such as COD, in Apex Legends you’re totally unable to cook grenades. No matter how long you hold them, they’ll take the same stock amount of time to go off. Throw those bad boys straight away!

Take two different weapon types to make attachments/ammo easier to get

Here’s the thing. Weapons in Apex Legends need attachments. Different types of weapons need different attachments. Snipers need different everything to other types, light and heavy need different extended mags. It might not make a difference sometimes, but my suggestion here is that you have two weapons that are different types. This is also because of ammo!

When you enter a loot zone, the chances are there is a split between light, heavy, and energy ammo. Sniper ammo often being rarer. Therefore, having two types of weapon means you pick up more ammo in total from one looting zone. As an example: You enter a building with 50 energy, 50 heavy, and 50 light ammo. If you have two light weapons, you get 50 ammo. If you have a heavy and a light, you get 100. It’s night and day!

This is the same for attachments, but less severe. It’s much easier to find all the attachments for your weapons, and fully kit out, without having to find two of everything. This might mean the difference between a win and a squad wipe.

Earlier circles do less damage – LOOT UP!

The ring is both more damaging and less damaging than you expect in Apex Legends. Initial rounds do very little damage, but once you’re past round 3, it’s going to start destroying you extremely quickly. Each ‘tick’ is around 1.5 seconds, so…

Apex Legends Damage from the ring per round

You can easily survive rounds 1 & 2, but you better start being careful from thereon – unless you want Wattson quoting something about how she made the ring and you should respect it.

You can hang from walls

Climb up a wall but don’t go over the lip – and you’ll instead hang from said wall. You can use this to peek over at enemies on rooftops, off into the distance, whatever you can think of! The only problem being you can’t shoot.

Use grenades, etc… to ZONE! Unless third-partying

Grenades have a 4 second timer before they explode from leaving your hand. If you’re throwing these at an enemies feet, that means they have 2-3 seconds to run. If you’re fighting anyone with any reaction time, this probably means you missed.

As such, it’s better to use ordnance to zone an enemy out of cover, or to distract them while you flank. Force them where you want them to shoot, essentially.

Unless you’re third-partying. Then people are probably too distracted, and you’re going to see knockdowns. It’s situational, but simply bear in mind the 4 second timer and you’ll do much better.

Arc stars are slightly quicker at 3 seconds from connection to explosion – but only if you’re close to the enemy. Grenades start ticking as soon as you throw them.

Be smart – choose high loot, low risk

You can see how many are in the dropship still. Which means you can see how many have already left, along with seeing their visible dive trails. If you want to have the largest chance of surviving, don’t drop with other squads, and loot somewhere with a large number of buildings, where no one else is.

Use this to decide where to go – best loot areas, and how many you’ll be fighting there. Sometimes if the hot zone is far along the path of the dropship, no one will drop there, seize that opportunity!

Loot is completely randomised, sometimes an area will have high-tier loot, sometimes you’ll only find whites. The only area that will always have a gold is the marked hot zone at the beginning of a round.

Apex Legends fake loot map
Do not believe these ‘loot maps’, land where you want, just aim for lots of buildings

That said, larger areas with more buildings have more concentrated loot. This means you have a higher chance of getting what you want, and is why the areas are so popular, simply because you do not have to travel as far to get to more buildings.

Slide as you heal

Healing usually means you’re at a disadvantage, having to move horribly slowly. This can mean death in a firefight in the worst situation – or less time looting in the best. Instead of doing this, slide as you heal if you can, making yourself a harder target or making your way to the next tasty building full of juicy gold shields.

Experience mostly comes from survival time, not kills

Going just for kills can be much more fun, but if you’re looking to level instead, you’re wiser just trying to survive for as long as possible.

You gain 50XP per kill, and 0.25XP per damage done. Say you kill someone from a full 200 health, it’s 100XP.

Per second that you survive, you gain 3XP. This means to get 100XP you need to survive for 30 seconds. This is even enhanced by playing with friends in a squad (5% bonus for each friend). You also get bonuses for surviving to the final 5, or winning the match. If you survive to the end of a match, say 15 minutes long, you earn 2700XP, even more with mates.

That’s 27 kills.

You’re not going to get 27 kills by dropping early and dying, so don’t do it. If you want to level, hang around and survive.

Arc stars can stick to enemies

Arc stars are mostly good for slowing and zoning enemies, with a surprisingly large radius! They can – however, do a lot of damage when stuck to an enemy.

They do more damage to shields, with a hefty total of 160 damage once exploded, or the smaller total of 100 damage if stuck to someone without a shield. It’s not going to kill someone with a blue shield or above, but it will wipe them enough for a cheeky to shot to end them.

You can climb higher with your weapons away

In Apex Legends, you can do essentially everything quicker with your weapons away, even drop faster from relocation towers.

When you’re climbing, there are areas you can’t reach unless you put your weapons away first, so make sure if you’re wanting to reach that high roof you do so!

Legend Specific Tips

Lifeline and Wattson recharges work on enemies

Both Lifelines tactical heal, and Wattsons ultimate shield charge, can be used by enemies.

If you let them get in close and push you away from these abilites, they can use them against you!

This is particularly worrisome for Wattson, since her ultimate is permanent unless destroyed. If you really want to change position, and have to leave it behind, shoot it first!

Take cover before you use a Mirage decoy

Mirage is the trickster of Apex Legends, and is honestly fairly difficult to use! One tip from our very own JTW666, is to use his decoy ability behind cover. As long as you use it when the enemies can’t see you, it raises the chance they’ll actually fall for the bamboozle. Don’t show yourself until they’ve gone for it!

Revenant can throw his tactical AND ordnance at the same time

Revenant may be in need of a slight buff, but as a plus, he can use his tactical alongside other ordnance. Throw it with an arc star! You can do surprisingly large bursts of damage if you remember this.

Gibby’s tactical ability can protect his team from his ultimate

Use this in a pinch to run off and give yourself time to heal! Perfect since his tactical speeds up heals and revives all on its own.

Use Pathfinders tactical to hook around obstacles

Pathfinders tactical ability can hook around obstacles, or over them, with extreme ease. The reason he’s so popular is his ability to quickly and effectively relocate around enemies, allowing him to flank and attack from where least expected. Use this often, and be creative. He can be devastating when someone uses this properly.

Bear in mind you can turn during this grapple to change direction, if you see yourself swinging into danger, turn about, and you can reverse direction pretty easily most of the time.

Pathfinder can grapple enemies to him

Pathfinder can also grapple enemies to him, surprising them by forcing them to come to you, enabling a wonderful uppercut, or peacekeeper blast to the face. Whatever floats your boat.

Admittedly this is very rarely useful, but incredibly satisfying to pull off.

Make sure you put Wattsons fences behind cover

Enemies can shoot the base of Wattsons fence to instantly destroy it. This means placing them in an open area is rarely useful, aside from as a quick distraction and a light show.

To make enemies take more time, or be unable to get around them, place the bases behind cover. They will have to find a way to shoot them, or in some cases simply be forced to walk through.

Bear in mind most good players are going to be able to find a way through, you’re going to have to be very creative, or use them to just slow people down.

An ult recharge will fill Wattsons ult in 1! (Max 1)

Wattson has the ability to fully recharge her ultimate with a single ultimate accelerant.

Just be careful, if you put more than one down, the old will explode!

I’ll be updating this article as I practice and learn more, so stay tuned! Good luck out there.
