Space Haven

Space Haven is a colony sim taking inspiration from Rimworld, Oxygen Not Included and Dwarf Fortress. Your ragtag crew has escaped from the devastated world of Earth, and must forge their own path of survival. Build your spaceship through complex, tile-by-tile construction. Choose how to deal with those you encounter, and see how long you can survive aboard your ‘Space Haven’.

The Earth is dying, ravaged by decades of calamity. Humanity abandons its burning homeworld, you and your crew are among the privileged few with access to a temporary haven and a chance at survival.

The upcoming Space Haven seems to have been designed around the core philosophy of freedom in space. Not only are you able to fully customise the ship that you explore the galaxy in, but you can customise your characters, deal with other factions anyway you feel fit, explore how and where you want…. even decide whether to rescue a crew member abducted by an alien bug. The procedural choices and creation already in place in other titles, like the aforementioned Rimworld or Oxygen Not Included, are all present.

The player will be able to construct their own narratives to the max. Denise -really- dislikes George, because of that time he stole her spoon. Jack has a thing for Mary even though she’s a schizophrenic, with extreme mood swings and a tendency to stab. Player created narratives are entertaining, they build themselves, and though not all people enjoy them, it provides real freedom in how someone experiences a title.

Captains log…. eh… five more years of cryo, I’m tired.

Spaceship construction will be an interesting challenge, due to the need to distribute all the correct gases throughout your corridors. Because people need oxygen, who knew? Oxygen, CO2, hazardous gases, temperature, power and comfort all need to be taken into account, and carefully controlled. Akin to Oxygen Not Included. I’m keen to see whether all the hazards of space are taken into account here. Planning for hull breaches, weapons fire tearing great gouts of flame through the ship, and so on, would be a joy for any sci-fi lover like myself.

We’ve worked hard for three years to create the architecture of the game, giving us a solid base to build upon.

Space Haven has been developed by Bugbyte Ltd., Finnish creators of the Battlevoid series, another space game which encompassed strategy and exploration. These past titles have received mostly positive feedback, which should be promising given the extended time they’ve had to work on this title. Seemingly over four years now!

The team are a group of 3, with others pitching in to help on Soundtrack, writing and the like. Something I’m very pleased about is that they are working with a professional sci-fi writer to develop their story and scenarios. Other Developers, take notes!

Speaking of which, instead of developing the soundtrack and space tunes themselves, they have instead opted to bring in Paul Zimmerman, who’s been hard at work not only realising the score, but also the sound effects. Here’s a small taste…
