Bugsnax, the latest title by indie game developers Young Horses has scurried onto PlayStation as part of the free PS Plus games available during the launch of the PS5.
Bugsnax takes you on a whimsical adventure to Snaktooth Island, home of the legendary half-bug half-snack creatures, Bugsnax. Invited by intrepid explorer Elizabert Megafig, you arrive to discover your host nowhere to be found, her camp in shambles, and her followers scattered across the island alone… and hungry!

Time to go hunting!
Those that have picked the game up should give it a chance as it really is a fun way to spend 6 or so hours, and what it lacks in general gameplay it more than makes up for with an unusual and interesting detective story.
Bugsnax is clearly aimed at a younger audience, similar to that of Astro’s Playroom, with its whimsical nature and funny art style. That being said there is an unshakable sinister vibe (at least there was for me) throughout the story that genuinely keeps the player guessing as they try to piece the mysteries of the island together, aided by interviews given by the other Grumpuses in camp after copious amounts of sentient snacks are eaten.
Once the player has visited a new area and has identified the creatures there it’s time to set out the traps for the Bugsnax in order to collect them, though the way to do so might not be immediately obvious. This is the hardest part of the game, as some require very creative ways in order to be caught. My personal favourites included Bunger and Scoopy Banoopy, even though the latter gave me a hard time.
All in all Bugsnax is a fun game that is nothing like anything else I have played before, a trait Young Horses seem to like to bake into their games.
